Getting a master’s in library science is considered the pinnacle of librarianship. From there on, it will mostly be a case of finding the right job for you – one that you will enjoy doing for years to come.
What a master’s degree means and what it offers
A master’s degree involves quite a bit more work than a lesser diploma. Those with master’s degrees are expected to be just that – masters of whichever craft they chose. As such, you will have little room for error once you become a master of librarianship, and your employees and clients will hold you to a certain standard.
More than many masters in their field, masters in library science are expected to make as few mistakes as possible due to the nature of their work. The data they organize should be neat, tidy and easily accessible. Clerical errors can end up having serious consequences in some cases. When choosing work as a librarian, assess your ability to avoid making mistakes and pick a position in line with this.view latest news from http://leader.mainelymediallc.com/news/2015-04-17/Community_News/Time_is_now_to_reinvent_school_libraries.html
If you, at times, find yourself prone to making mistakes, you will probably be better off working in a place where your errors won’t cause as much damage. A book placed in the wrong column inside a library will have a negligible effect compared to an error when managing the finances of a company.
What can you expect when you are out of university
A master’s in library science is sought by those who are truly committed to organization and preservation of data. If you don’t appreciate information and don’t have an eye for detail, you aren’t likely to succeed in this field, and you might even hate your job. It’s no secret that the more we love what we do, the better we do it, and library science is no different.
With this master’s degree, don’t expect to spend a lot of work hours outside or traveling. Instead, much of your work will be done inside four walls – a perk for some and a nightmare for others. What you can expect, however, is to have plenty of job opportunities all around Canada and even outside it. Library science is a broad field and the opportunities for work are plentiful for those with enough motivation to find them. Due to the constant evolution in the field of library science, everyone considering themselves a master in the field should also have decent computer knowledge.
Your library science master’s degree will also allow your career to progress towards more responsibility and a higher pay, depending on how good you are at what you do and your level of dedication. If you show promise, certain companies might even give you a position with a lot of responsibility right off the bat, like one that will have you manage their finance or handle their correspondence with clients.
One thing is for sure – you probably won’t find yourself with limited career options once you have obtained your master’s degree. Not only will you enjoy the possibility of a fulfilling career, but you will also find that masters in library science enjoy a somewhat privileged social status due to being known as great handlers of information.
